How to Use Indexes in cPanel?


Indexes in cPanel control how directories on your website are displayed when a visitor tries to access them. You can choose how the contents of a directory are shown or prevent directory listings altogether. Follow these steps on how to use Indexes in cPanel:

  1. Log in to cPanel
    If you’re not logged in, enter your cPanel username and password to access the cPanel dashboard.
  2. Find the Indexes Icon
    Search for the "Advanced" option on your dashboard within cPanel. Click on the "Indexes" icon. It usually looks like a list or a directory.
  3. Select a Directory
    You will see a list of your website’s directories. Navigate to the directory you want to manage by clicking on its name.
  4. Choose an Indexing Option
    After selecting a directory, you will see four options for indexing:
    1. Default System Setting: Uses the default setting provided by your web host.
    2. No Indexing: Prevents directory contents from being shown.
    3. Standard Indexing: Shows directory contents as a simple list
    4. Fancy Indexing: Displays directory contents alongside additional information and icons.
    5. Click the corresponding button to select the option that best meets your needs.
  5. Save Your Changes
    Once you’ve selected your preferred indexing option, click the "Save" button to apply the changes.
