How to Set Up SSH Access In cPanel?


SSH (Secure Shell) enables secure access to your web server's command line interface.This can be useful for more advanced management tasks. Here's how to use SSH in cPanel account:

  1. Log into cPanel
    Login to your cPanel login page by entering your username and password, by clicking the "Log in" button in the cPanel dashboard.
  2. Find SSH Access
    Go to the "Security" section: In your cPanel dashboard, locate the "Security" section.This section is usually found towards the bottom of the page. Click on "SSH Access",in the Security section, you will see an option labeled "SSH Access." Click on it to open the SSH Access interface.
  3. Manage SSH Keys
    Generate a New SSH Key: If you don't already have an SSH key, you will need to generate one. Select "Manage SSH Keys" from the menu.
  4. Create a New Key
    1. Select on the "Generate a New Key" button.
    2. Choose a key size (2048 or 4096 bits), enter a key name, and select a key type (RSA is frequently used).
    3. Optionally, set a passphrase for additional security.
    4. Click the "Generate Key" button.
  5. Authorize the Key
    1. After generating the key, you will see it listed under "Public Keys."
    2. Click on "Manage" next to your key and then click "Authorize" to allow SSH access with
      this key.
  6. Download the Private Key
    Go back to the "SSH Access" interface and click on "Manage SSH Keys." View/Download: Click on "View/Download" next to the private key you just created.
    Download the private key to your computer and save it in a secure location.This key is required for setting up an SSH connection to your server.
  7.  Use an SSH Client
    Choose an SSH Client. To connect to your server, you will need an SSH client.Among the most well-known are Terminal for Linux and macOS and PuTTY for Windows.
    1. Configure the SSH Client
    2. Open your SSH client
    3. Enter your server's hostname or IP address.
    4. Specify the port (default is 22).
    5. Load your private key file if required (PuTTY users will need to convert the private key to.ppk format using PuTTYgen).
    6. Connect to your server.
  8. Connect to Your Server
    1. Login: When prompted, enter your cPanel username.
    2. Passphrase: If you set a passphrase for your SSH key, enter it when prompted.

By following these steps, you can easily set up and access SSH through your cPanel account. This provides you with a secure and powerful way to manage your server.
