How to Manage Directory Privacy in cPanel?


Managing directory privacy in cPanel helps you protect sensitive information by requiring a username and password to access specific folders. Follow the below listed steps to manage
directory privacy:

  1. Log in to cPanel
    Open your web browser and navigate to the cPanel login page. Enter your username and password. Click the "Log in" button.
  2. Access Directory Privacy
    Navigate to the "Files" section by scrolling in the cPanel dashboard. Click on "Directory Privacy."
  3. Select a directory.
    The Directory Privacy tool displays a list of your website's folders (directories). Select the folder that needs to be secured.
  4. Enable Password Protection
    After picking a folder, you will see the option "Password protect this directory." To enable password protection, check the box. Enter a name for the protected directory (this is simply a label, so anything goes). Click on "Save."
  5. Create a User for the Directory
    Once the directory is protected, you'll need to create a user who can access it. Scroll down to the "Create User" section. Enter a username and a strong password.Re-enter the password for confirmation. Click "Save."
  6. Accessing the Protected Directory
    When you or anyone else tries to access the protected directory via a web browser, a login prompt will appear.To gain access, enter the username and password that you have generated.
  7. Managing Users
    If you need to add, change, or delete users:
    1. Go back to the "Directory Privacy" tool.
    2. Select the protected directory.
    3. Scroll down to the "Authorized Users" section.
    4. Here, you can add new users, change passwords, or remove users as needed.
  8. Removing Password Protection
    If you no longer need to protect a directory:
    1. Go to the "Directory Privacy" tool.
    2. Select the directory you want to unprotect.
    3. Uncheck the option next to "Password-protect this directory."
    4. Click "Save" to remove the password protection.
