How to Configure MIME Types in cPanel?

MIME types (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) tell browsers how to handle different file types. For example, they can specify that a .txt file should be opened as plain text or a .jpg file should be displayed as an image. Here’s how to configure MIME types in cPanel:

  1. Log in to cPanel
If you’re not already logged in, enter your cPanel username and password to access the cPanel dashboard. Click on the "MIME Types" icon. It usually looks like a piece of paper or a document.
  2. Add a New MIME Type
Go to the "Create a MIME Type" area. In the "MIME Type" field, enter the MIME type you want to add (e.g., text/html for HTML files). In the "Extension(s)" field, enter the file extension(s) you want to associate with this MIME type (e.g., .html, .htm). In order to save the new MIME type, click the "Add" button.
  3. View User-Defined MIME Types
To view the MIME types you have added scroll down to the "User-Defined MIME Types" section. Click the "Delete" link next to a MIME type to confirm its deletion.
  4. View System MIME Types
The system's default MIME types are displayed in the "System MIME Types" section. These serve as a guide for handling standard file types but cannot be changed.
  5. Tips for Configuring MIME Types
    1. Use Correct MIME Types: Ensure you use the correct MIME type for the file extensions to avoid issues with how files are displayed or downloaded by browsers.
    2. Common MIME Types: Some common MIME types include image/jpeg for JPEG images, application/pdf for PDF files, and audio/mpeg for MP3 files.
    3. Testing: After adding a MIME type, test the associated files to make sure they are handled as expected by the browser.
